Simey’s journey to find herself and build her confidence

Simey came to Phnom Penh as a young teenager hoping to complete her high school diploma. She ended up joining the Donbosco Professional Training Centre for girls – learning computer and secretary skills, although she did graduate from high school in 2020.

For the first half a month at Donbosco, Simey cried her eyes out because the environment was so strange to her, but afterward, it is a life chapter she said opened her up for the better. She lives by one rule, if they can do it, so can I. She became more observant, disciplined herself with no cell phone on weekdays except for Sunday and spare time every weekend teaching English to young students in Kampong Speu province.

Simey joined Urbanland as a Human Resource intern in July 2020, soon after she left school. She worked hard at motivating and encouraging herself to grow in her newfound profession – Human resources and Administration.

"I believe in stepping out of my comfort zone to improve myself."

She was able to grow steadily under the guidance of her manager, particularly on professional matters, gradually learning the basics like writing a professional email, planning internal communication and honing other administrative skills.

Coming in with a minimal understanding of her line of work, she said it was very important and lucky of her that the team at Urbanland was very encouraging and treat her without judgment. She built up her confidence to execute her work, become more flexible, make mistakes and learn from them as most people do. But most important of all, Simey appreciates the fact that she has grown so much in the past two years and looks forward to excelling even more in her field.
